Objectives

  • To familiarize students with commonly used words in sentences and questions.
  • To help students strengthen their fluency and comprehension in spoken English.

Starter (5 min)

Create a story chain. Facilitator can start by saying a sentence as a beginning of the story. Students can think and be creative here. They can add to the sentences. Facilitator if needed can ask the students what was their favourite part of the story they created and what they did not like in the story.

Topic of Discussion (40 min)

(Recap included) Facilitator can ask if students recall the previous class on ‘wh’ sound. 

  • Write question words (what, where, when, who, why) on chart with different colours. 
  • Explain each word, give examples. 
  • Ask students to make questions. 

Story example: Ram is a 5-year-old boy. He loves to eat apples. His mother gets him an apple every day. Ram likes to share his apple with his family and friends. One day he takes his apple and gave it to his friend Sam. Ask: What is the boy’s name?

Activity (10 min)

Ask students: What would you like to know about your friend?Think of 3 questions and share in class.

Note for teachers

Use of as many colours could be one of a good way to gain the attention of students.

Question for takeaway reflection (3 min)

Imagine you are at a vegetable shop. Could you make a list of 4–5 questions you would be asking the vendor when buying vegetables?

  • Facilitator can do activity individually if grouping isn’t possible.

Objectives

Familiarizing students with common words in English

Starter

Breathing exercise:Imagine you’re in a forest, can you hear wild animals playing? Can you share what you’re thinking?

Discussion

Sight words list: that, this, it, those, these, then, there, on, in, or, is, the, a, up, down, are.  Ask how people answer questions using sentences. Introduce sight words as commonly used in sentence formation. Show word cards in colours, explain words using example sentences. Play muted video story. Ask students to describe scenes in full sentences.

Activity

Facilitator becomes supermarket customer. Students take turns as salesperson. Show item pictures and ask: What is this? This is a packet of chips.

Plenary

  • Did you understand the difference between that, this and those, these?
  • Did you understand the meaning of each sight word?

Objectives

Recap of sight and question words for better understanding.

Starter (5 min)

Play a song or rhyme. Ask students to freeze.

Discussion (20 min)

Story: (Not specified) 

 

Facilitator can now take each question word and ask questions to students. Students can try answering in full sentences with sight words. Facilitator can show real life objects for the discussion.

Activity (25 min)

Picture Description:

  • Divide class into 3–4 groups. Ask them to create questions and answers using sight and question words.
  • Provide a small passage. Students draw two columns—identify and sort question words and sight words.

Plenary (5 min)

Ask: Any sight or question word that was not understood?
